Good full-day rail trips sell the seats before the fares, and the best ones go first. Below: the 15 to book early, what each includes and how they differ.
Pack three major Thai sights into one long day: watch a train pass through Maeklong Railway Market, ride a longtail boat to Damnoen Saduak, and explore Ayutthaya’s temple ruins with an English or Spanish-speaking guide. Start at 8:15 am from a Cape Town pickup point and ride a comfortable coach to Franschhoek. Choose estates on the Blue, Pink, Red, or seasonal Navy route, then hop on and off trams and buses for tastings, food, gin, and vineyard views. Tastings and lunch cost extra.

Spend a full day tasting South African wines in Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. Travel from Palma to Sóller on the old Red Lightning train, then see Port de Sóller, Deià, and Valldemossa by tram, minibus, and on foot. Guides such as Michael, Sven, Olaf, and Carolin are known for warm, informative hosting. Expect tapas, mountain roads, and a full but rewarding day.
“Our guide Michael was excellent, filling us in with the history of places, wound through with entertaining 'back stories'. Only criticism is that I went to the main station where the staff were somewhat confused about the type of trip, until they found an English speaking woman (I wish I had taken a mote of her name) who, on seeing the email I had been sent, took us direct to where Michael was waiting. So, perhaps supply the guide with mobile phone numbers of participants, just in case. This trip was the highlight of my one week stay.”
Leave Seoul for Mt. Seorak National Park, Shinheungsa Temple, Nami Island, and an optional rail bike ride near Gapyeong. “Very large group. Leader was not friendly. Although advertised in English, leader spoke in 3 languages. Only gave directions about when/where to meet. No interesting facts shared with the group about Mallorca. A young woman sitting at back of bus was vomiting and leader wouldn’t let her move up because “those seated up front paid more” which was not true. Overall I would NOT recommend this tour. Most of the time spent on vehicles when no interesting facts about Mallorca were shared by the leader.”
